Children’s Author Visits Local Primary School
Our children had a virtual visit from a local author Clare Helen who read aloud her hugely funny book ‘Poo! Is that You?’ All the younger children followed the adventures of Lenny the Lemur in the Amazon rainforest and then took part in a lemur-themed quiz and draw-a-long. Clare, also answered all the questions they had about the story and what it is like to be a writer.
“During lockdown, we tried hard to encourage the children to keep reading whilst they were at home. It was lovely to witness them enjoying dressing up as their favourite book character and taking part in reading themed competitions for World Book Day. We asked them to send in ‘I’m reading in an unusual place’ photos and to also guess which of their teachers were hiding behind their favourite books.” said Head of School, Mrs Rachel Rood.
The author visit was organised in collaboration with Bridgwater-based The Snug Bookshop who have also offered the school the opportunity to benefit from their ‘Fill a Bookshelf’ scheme which supports schools to stock their libraries with some of the best and latest titles for young readers. The scheme asks book buyers to purchase a title and gift it to the school and Mrs Rood is hopeful that the donations will make a big impact on the choice of books available to the children. Throughout March the pupils are also taking part in a Readathon to raise further funds to revamp the school’s library with new furniture as well as more books.
A final boost to the school’s mission to instil a love of reading in children was received when they won a set of books titled ‘Great Women’ from the Bridgwater Morrisons Community Champion’s International Women’s Day competition.
